Hi Wendy,
It is so good when others outside of the sphere of the immediate
participants are inspired.
Had a look at your site and it looks like you had a lot of fun as I
did doing the projects with Macquarie Primary.
The chess board was made with square cement pavers, decorated with
various shades of black and white recycled tiles with some handmade
tiles included within the dark and light tiles.
The blocks at each end that are used for sitting or standing on (some
of the shorties need that birds eye view) are made from cut and glued
Hebel blocks, which are then decorated with tile pictures on all
sides except the base. These blocks have steel rods in the base which
are then cemented into a hole in the ground so that they cannot be
removed. The pavers are then set ontop of sand as you would ordinary
pavers and cement put all around the edge to stop removal. A bead of
landscaping silicon is then squeezed between the joints of the pavers.
I managed to get some x-hockey field grass and laid it all around the
the chess board on which we painted hop-scotch boards that the kids
had designed. Some of them had never heard of hop-scotch! (I am
showing my age).
I hope you can manage to do something similar, the chess set at
Macquarie has encouraged the surrounding schools to come and
participate in chess competitions and encouraged children who may not
have be interested or exposed to the game to at least have a go and
know what the game is about.

FROG MOSAIC at Sydney Airport

“Rainbow Serpent” – Gordon Hookey, 2002, WALCHA
This mosaic sculpture was funded by an Australia Council for the Arts grant and made with the ideas and assistance of the local Thunghatti people. It has been placed overlooking the mill-hole, home of the legendary rainbow serpent.
Gordon Hookey, a member of Boomali Aboriginal Artists Co-operative, is represented in most State gallery collections and participated in the 2001 Perth International Arts.

Tamworth - Street Mosaic
Tamworth, in country NSW, is home to a big Country Music Festival over the Australia Day long weekend (26th January), every year. This street mosaic represents the cultural and historical heritage of the area, as well as this famous music festival.
